Brooklyn Technical High School, in collaboration with the Brooklyn Tech Alumni Foundation, National Grid, and Khan’s Tutorial has launched a program to introduce Middle School students to the exciting world of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. The program is designed to develop the next generation of STEM leaders by preparing the middle school students for advanced studies in these fields at both the high school and college level.
Students will have a variety of project based experiences including design and modeling, automation and robotics, energy and the environment, the magic of electrons, and the science of technology. The classes are taught by Brooklyn Tech faculty with middle school teaching experience. Current Brooklyn Tech students will serve as teacher assistants. Field trips and guest presentations will be part of the program.
Students in the program will be expected to take the Specialized High School Admissions Test (SHSAT) and to apply for Brooklyn Tech. Preparation for the entrance examination will be integrated into the program.
Upon graduating from middle school, students who are admitted to Brooklyn Tech will continue in the program and be assigned a mentor from National Grid. A true pipeline program, the middle school students admitted to Brooklyn Tech will also be guided through high school and the college process and into an engineering/technology based career possibly at National Grid.
