Freaquently Asked Questions (FAQs):

1. What Is Common Core?

Common Core is a set of educational standards for English language arts (ELA) and mathematics designed to ensure K-12 students in the U.S. are well-prepared for college and careers. Developed by the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers with input from educators and experts, the standards focus on critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills. The ELA standards emphasize critical skills such as reading, writing, speaking, and listening, while the math standards focus on key concepts, procedural skills, and real-world applications. Voluntarily adopted by many states since 2010, Common Core assessments, developed by consortia like SBAC and PARCC, measure student progress in these areas. While the standards have been praised for promoting equity and college and career preparedness, they have also faced criticism for reducing local control over education decisions.

2. What are the main topics covered by Common Core?

Common Core covers two main subject areas: English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics.

1. English Language Arts (ELA):

  • Speaking and Listening: Development of effective communication skills through discussion and presentations.
  • Language: Focus on vocabulary acquisition, grammar, and usage.

2. Mathematics:

  • Multiple Choice: Students read passages and answer questions by selecting the best answer from four options.
  • Short Response: Students are asked to provide short written answers based on their reading of a passage.
  • Extended Response: This section requires longer written responses where students analyze passages, provide evidence, and demonstrate their writing skills.

Mathematics Exam:
