Monday, March 10, 2014 marked the release of the results of the Specialized High School Admissions Test (SHSAT), the sole determinant of admission into New York City’s prestigious Specialized High Schools including Stuyvesant High School, Bronx High School of Science, and Brooklyn Technical High School. The aforementioned schools accept a total of 2,500 students per year out of the 30,000 students that take the challenging exam. The SHSAT program at Khan’s Tutorial (KT) is conducted year round with students starting classes 8-12 months before their exam. Over the last 20 years, KT has helped over 1,600 students gain admission to these schools
As of last week, a total of 181 students from KT have been accepted. “We’ve had an amazing year, and I’m so proud of our hard working students and their dedicated parents,” said Mavrick James, SHSAT Instructor at KT Ozone Park.
The breakdown of KT’s acceptances in terms of schools are:
Stuyvesant High School – 33
Bronx High School of Science – 52
Brooklyn Technical High School – 62
The remaining 34 acceptances were to the six other highly selective NYC Specialized High Schools.
8% of the students from Stuyvesant, Bronx Science, and Brooklyn Tech are Khan’s Tutorial students, mostly South-Asian Americans, the fastest growing community in NYC. Although, most of Khan’s Tutorial’s students are Bangladeshi American, the West Indian community is the second largest community on the rise. “Khan’s Tutorial’s distinguished SHSAT program strives to assist students in getting into the top high schools in NYC. While the majority of our students are primarily from South Asia, more and more students of West Indian descent and of other different ethnicities are joining our classes. This helps us tailor our program to help students of various backgrounds, expanding our program to all of NYC’s great young minds,” said Lisa Puran, Quality Manager from KT Ozone Park.
This Acceptance Weekend, all students of last year’s SHSAT program were invited to return to KT to with their acceptance letters to celebrate their success and share their stories with future test takers.
With 9 locations in the outer boroughs of New York City, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and in the Jackson Heights, Jamaica, Astoria, Ozone Park, and Floral Park neighborhoods of Queens, Khan’s Tutorial primarily serves in assisting families in low-income Bangladeshi-American neighborhoods. Over 1,600 students have gained admission to New York City’s Specialized High Schools through Khan’s Tutorial since its inception in 1994.
