This past weekend, MIST NYC (Muslim Inter-Scholastic Tournament) was held at Columbia University Medical Center. MIST is a 3-day-long interactive event encompassing educational workshops, team-building exercises, and several competitions with the core focus being on Islam. Additionally, the program helps students develop leadership skills and become motivated members of their community. Every year, some of the best and brightest students from all around New York City gather together to compete and represent their high school.
Dr. Ivan Khan addresses the competitors and commends their work with KT Jackson Height’s Quality Manager and MIST Organizer Syed Jipu.
This year, Khan’s Tutorial is a proud sponsor of MIST and a supporter of their mission and their educational values. A large number of MIST competitors, organizers, judges and volunteers are a part of the KT family either as current students, alumni, Instructors, and Directors. Additionally, some of MIST’s largest numbers are from NYC’s Specialized High Schools, particularly Stuyvesant High School, The Bronx High School of Science, and Brooklyn Technical High School. “MIST is an exciting and powerful atmosphere, where people of all different ages, backgrounds and talents come together and embrace creativity and community,” said Sami Rabb, Senior Director at Khan’s Tutorial and Spoken Word Judge at MIST.

Highlights of this year’s competition include: The MIST bowl (jeopardy style knowledge test), fashion design contest (second place winner was KT Astoria’s very own Saief Ahmed), musical performances, and several inspiring speeches. On the last day of MIST over 600 participants gathered for their closing Awards Ceremony. Senior Directors Niloy Jafar Iqbal, and Mohammad Hossain addressed the MIST family, congratulating them on another successful tournament and commending their great work. “Speaking in front of so many people on behalf of KT, was an exhilarating experience. Although MIST is essentially a competition with teams pitted against one another, there was definitely a strong sense of unity, and by the end of the awards ceremony everyone felt like family. It was an emotional end to an amazing weekend.” said Mohammad Hossain, Senior Director at Khan’s Tutorial.
With 9 locations in the outer boroughs of New York City, including Brooklyn, the Bronx, Jackson Heights, Jamaica, Astoria, Ozone Park, and Floral Park, Khan’s Tutorial primarily serves in assisting families in low-income neighborhoods. A total of 1,625 students have gained admission to New York City’s Specialized High Schools through Khan’s Tutorial since its inception in 1994.
