US Department of State visits Khan’s Tutorial for Documentary Film

New York, NY- This past week the US Department of State Office of Broadcast Support visited Khan’s Tutorial at their Castle Hill and Sutphin locations to film a segment for Channel 24 in Bangladesh. Funded by the US government, Channel 24 was sent to several cities across the USA organizing press tours in order to capture the theme of “Bangladeshi Life in America.”  As the NYC Bangladeshi population is one of the fastest growing immigration populations, the crew visited several NYC areas to speak with professionals, housewives, new immigrants, as well as Bangladeshi Americans who grew up in the US.

On April 7, Producer Linda Lin of the Office of Broadcast Support and the Channel 24 Team visited KT Castle Hill to meet with Dr. Ivan Khan and several Bronx community leaders. The team interviewed Dr. Khan regarding the importance of education for Bangladeshis living in the US and how KT has helped 1,878 students gain acceptance to NYC’s Specialized High Schools. Additionally, Assemblyman Luis Sepulveda attended the visit to speak about the Bangladeshi Bronx area and Khan’s Tutorial’s work in the community.

“Bangladeshi parents place the education of their children in high priority.  As reported by local media, Bangladeshi students get into the elite specialized high schools in record numbers.  One of the main reasons is test preparation centers like Khan’s Tutorial. The success of Bangladeshi students is especially impressive when many Bangladeshi parents are blue-collar workers who live in low-income neighborhoods,” said Linda Lin, Producer of the Office of Broadcast Support.

On April 8, the Channel 24 team visited KT Sutphin to interview students, parents, and Chariperson Mrs. Nayeema Khan to speak with them about and their experiences and success in the U.S. education system. The team also interviewed scholars from Khan Foundation’s College Access Program which provides free aid to high-achieving high school students from low-income backgrounds.

With 10 locations in the outer boroughs of New York City, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and in the Jackson Heights, Jamaica, Astoria, Ozone Park, Richmond Hill and Floral Park neighborhoods of Queens, Khan’s Tutorial primarily serves in assisting families in low-income Bangladeshi-American neighborhoods. Over 1,878 students have gained admission to New York City’s Specialized High Schools through Khan’s Tutorial since its inception in 1994.
