Khan’s Tutorial Annual SHSAT Awards Ceremony Celebrates 253 Students

SHSAT Students with their Plaques of Achievement.

On April 25, 2015, Khan’s Tutorial (KT) hosted its Annual SHSAT Awards Ceremony for their students who gained acceptance to NYC’s Specialized High Schools. Just weeks ago, the results of the SHSAT were released across NYC. This week, accepted students and their families gathered to celebrate a year of hard work and the resulting success.

The SHSAT program at KT is conducted year round with students starting classes 8-12 months before their exam. Over the last 20 years, KT has helped over 1,878 students gain admission to these schools. This year alone, KT helped a record 253 students gain acceptance to the new Specialized High Schools, as well as Stuyvesant High School, the Bronx High School of Science, and Brooklyn Technical High School.

“We’re thrilled to announce that we helped this many students this year and we look forward to being able to help more and more students and families in the future,” said Mohammad Hossain, Director of KT’s SHSAT Program.

The following list illustrates the number of Khan’s Tutorial students with scores for each Specialized High School:

Stuyvesant High School – 76 Khan’s Tutorial students

The Bronx High School of Science – 94 Khan’s Tutorial students

Brooklyn Technical High School – 72 Khan’s Tutorial students

The remaining 11 students were accepted to the following prestigious Specialized High Schools in NYC: The Brooklyn Latin School, High School of American Studies at Lehman College, Queens High School for the Sciences at York College, High School for Mathematics, Science and Engineering at City College, Staten Island Technical High School and Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts.

We are very proud to announce that 10% of Bronx Science’s incoming freshman class are KT students. Currently, 10% of the students from Stuyvesant High School, the Bronx High School are previous students.  Most of these students are South-Asian Americans and who comprise one of the fastest growing communities in NYC.

The Annual SHSAT Awards Ceremony is KT’s largest event of the year, with SHSAT students, their families, and KT staff members attending the celebration. Highlights of the night included awards for 3 outstanding students:

Manosh Majumder, who was not able to attend, retook the challenging exam and gained acceptance to Brooklyn Technical High School as a 9th grader.

Saimul Hossain achieved a high score of 703 on the SHSAT; displaying a nearly perfect test performance.

Chidobe Umeasor, who was not able to attend, is our Opportunity Scholarship winner who displayed immense academic growth during her time at KT’s SHSAT program and is the KT All Star Award winner of 2015.

Guest speakers at the ceremony included Congresswoman Grace Meng, and Dr. Abdul Momen, the Bangladesh Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN. Finally, KT recognized many of its excellent Directors and Instructors for their great achievement in helping our students improve academically throughout the year.

“We are thrilled we were able to connect our students to our supporting staff, inspiring community leaders, and of course each other at tonight’s ceremony. We have students from all over New York City who gained admission and just knowing you have a whole community’s support will make for an easier transition into high school. Best of luck to our students; they will always be a part of the Khan’s Tutorial family,” said Dr. Ivan Khan, CEO of Khan’s Tutorial.

With 10 locations in the outer boroughs of New York City, including Brooklyn, the Bronx, Jackson Heights, Jamaica, Astoria, Ozone Park, Richmond Hill and Floral Park, Khan’s Tutorial primarily serves in assisting families in low-income neighborhoods. A total of 1,878 students have gained admission to New York City’s Specialized High Schools through Khan’s Tutorial since its inception in 1994.
