Today Khan’s Tutorial is featured on the front page of NBC News – Asian America. The news report titled “Growing Tutoring Market Highlights Possible Gaps in Public Education” examines the challenges faced by low-income communities in education, the lack of resources within the public school system, and the rising demand for tutoring services across the country.

NBC Asian America spoke with Khan’s Tutorial CEO & President, Dr. Ivan Khan about the role Khan’s Tutorial plays in closing gaps in education within the NYC public school system. In 2014, Khan’s Tutorial launched the Dr. Mansur Khan SHSAT Opportunity Scholarship, providing free SHSAT tutoring starting with South Asians and African American & Latino 7th graders in NYC. Dr. Khan spoke at length about the lack of awareness surrounding the SHSAT and the lack of participation from NYC Public Schools regarding the scholarship program.

“To serve [New York’s] range of [students’] income levels and ethnic diversity is a big challenge for the NYC school system. What you’ll see is that in poorest districts there is a lot of neglect and it’s a big challenge to find the resources to serve every district equally. The number one barrier that we’ve noticed to tackle is the lack of awareness in under-represented communities. The effort made by several schools to get [our] scholarship application to top African American and Latino students – that effort just wasn’t there,” said Dr. Ivan Khan, Khan’s Tutorial CEO.

Since the scholarship’s launch, KT has awarded over $200,000 in scholarship seats to NYC students from underrepresented backgrounds. Last year, KT helped 8 students gain acceptance to a Specialized High School though their scholarship program.

“It is great news that Khan’s Tutorial is featured on the front page of NBC Asian America today. I want to personally thank our team for working so hard. It is their dedication that has helped our students from all minority communities across NYC learn about educational opportunities and reach academic success.” said Mrs. Nayeema Khan, Khan’s Tutorial Chairperson.
