New York, NY – Yesterday, PBS released the second part of its two part series, Making the Grade, a story on education in New York City. The story featured Khan’s Tutorial’s students and parents in the SHSAT program. Viewers can learn about the journey to the Specialized High Schools and the disparities in NYC public education.

“The problem is, an eighth grade class in the Bronx, unfortunately, may be far behind a sixth grade class in a more privileged neighborhood in our public school system. I think the first step is to fix the pipeline by ensuring that there are expanded opportunities for accelerated learners from kindergarten, first and second grade,” said Khan’s Tutorial CEO & President, Dr. Ivan Khan. “We want to get into these schools because we want a better opportunity to learn. Like, sometimes, the schools around us, like, they might not have all of the resources needed for us to achieve our goals. For instance, I want to become a software engineer when I grow up,” said Nafees Abdullah, KT SHSAT student. With 11 locations in the outer boroughs of New York City, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and in the Jackson Heights, Jamaica, Astoria, Sunnyside, Ozone Park, and Floral Park neighborhoods of Queens, Khan’s Tutorial primarily serves in assisting families in low-income, new immigrant neighborhoods. Since 1994, Khan’s Tutorial has helped 3,383 students receive offers to New York City’s Specialized High Schools.
