SHSAT – Ryan Khokon
What hobbies are you passionate about?
First of all, I am really passionate about swimming. Since I was 5 or 6, I would always have swimming lessons every Saturday. From my wee days of swimming, I loved the rush of the wind above me, the water rushing past me, the adrenaline flowing through my body, and especially how relaxing repeating the strokes were. Along with this, reading adventure type books is something else I enjoy very much. With these books, from the first page I would be sucked out of the real world and into one limited by only the author’s imagination. I also love how reading makes me forget all of my problems, and puts me into the shoes of the character on an adventure better then any video game that could ever be created.
Who is your biggest role model and why?
My biggest role model is my mom, because her story inspires me every day. She started from humble beginnings in a foreign country, living in a village and accomplishing nothing more but making ends meets. Her mother was very occupied with working and supporting the family, so her and her decisions were unsupported; she was mostly on her own. Throughout her school career, she struggled plenty with the hard assignments and strict conditions, but she persevered and kept going. Sensing an opportunity and with just a few clothes, barely any money, and a sheer ton of determination, she found herself a ticket and flew to America, the land of opportunity. She struggled with learning the language and getting a job, but no matter how hard it was she kept going. She slowly built a life here, going to college and getting a medical degree, and I was born soon after that. Her story of determination and hard work now helps me keep going with my schoolwork, and helps me face my problems. It reminds me that anything is possible with just the will to work hard for it.
If you were president for a day, name one thing you would do in office.
If I was a president for a day, I would try to use my time to establish better trading and government relationships with countries all across the world. I believe that the only way that the world can do big things is if people use their resources to work together, and this has been proved before. The ISS was only developed in the time it took because of the collaboration of 15 countries, and the station developed numerous scientific advancements. The COVID vaccine was also developed in record time, just one year, because of the collaborated scientific and distributed efforts from places across the world. Since this could deescalate the global tension, and encourage working together, I would personally schedule meetings with leaders (like Putin) across the world. I would collaborate with the leader, draw deals with different issues, and try to sort out any difference that pops up. Not only that, but I would take it further and try to create trade deals, and diplomatic ties.
How do you plan to make the world a better place?
My dream is to become an Engineer just to create things that will change the world. I plan to try to attend MIT to learn engineering, and get my degree t o start my own tech company. I would first invest my own funds in project, which would be a very efficient method to electrochemically turn CO2 into things like oxygen or MOFs, which if widespread could help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. When I successfully create it, I will use the funds I gain from it to grow my company to handle new things, and reinvest into other things like stronger ion thruster engines, or a mechanism for a solar arm that orbits the earth and launches spacecraft to its destination, instead of burning fuel.
What is your number one study tip for all the students reading this?
To all the students reading this, my number one study tip is to create a review sheet. When I study, having all the material to study organized for me on one paper helps me concentrate more then using a bunch of packets and work sheets that is easy to mix up. When I do this, it’s more efficient as memorizing becomes easier and you don’t have to focus as hard just to re find something and look at all the material again. It might be an extra hassle to create, but to everyone reading this, I say it’s totally worth it for when you start the review.

What hobbies are you passionate about?
I am really passionate about playing soccer, it’s one of my favorite things to do.
Who is your biggest role model and why?
Lionel Messi, he is one of my favorite players and inspires me to overcome obstacles.
If you were president for a day, name one thing you would do in office.
One thing to do is a pretty hard question, but the first thing I would do is make sure people in major poverty are given compensation to assist them.
How do you plan to make the world a better place?
I really believe there is a lot of major disasters currently evolving in the world. For example, the ongoing covid 19 pandemic, global warming, poverty, war, inflation rates, and crime rates. These things all should be fixed. Vaccinations can help COVID 19, people being more aware of their environment can help fix the issue of global warming that is slowly getting worse. Poverty and inflation needs to be fixed with lowering printed money and increasing donation to the people in poverty. Crime rates are mostly caused when people develop trauma, bullying, or an ongoing situation in their childhood.
What is your number one study tip for all the students reading this?
Use creative studying when you can’t remember something, find creative ways to study that will help you to remember certain things, just reading the words all over again will not work as well.
SHSAT – Maliha Islam
What hobbies are you passionate about?
Some of my hobbies that I’m passionate about are reading, writing stories, and arts and crafts. Since I was a little girl, I loved to read and write. Both of these things fall under the subject of ELA, which is one of my favorite subjects. I love to read and write fictional stories like mysteries, stories with suspense, and so much more. Not only that, but I love to do arts and crafts as well. These arts and crafts are like small projects that can be done very quickly and easily, which makes it very entertaining. For example, painting something on a canvas, making colorful envelopes, creating sculptures with clays, etc.
Who is your biggest role model and why?
My biggest role model is my mom. My mom has always helped me no matter what. She’s stayed by my side during tough times, understood what’s the best for me, and has been the best mom a girl could ever ask for. She gives up all her energy and time for her 3 daughters, and makes sure that we all are happy, healthy, and safe wherever, whenever.
If you were president for a day, name one thing you would do in office.
If I were president for a day, there would be so many things I would want to do in office. But the biggest thing I would want to do, is showing the best in a woman. This is because, in politics and the government, (especially in the United States) there are many assumptions that say that women can’t do certain things that men can. I want to show them, that that’s not true, and women are able to do ANYTHING possible. So to prove my opinion, I will help as many people around the world as I can in under 24 hours. This includes increasing security (everywhere), feeding people who are living in poverty, and removing as much garbage and pollution from our land/ocean as possible. Now of course, it would be quite difficult to do everything everywhere. So I would make laws that state for all of these things to happen, so after I wouldn’t be in office anymore, people can still continue to help our planet and people, as much as they can.
How do you plan to make the world a better place?
Ending Racism. The world is full of hate, and has been for so many years. The only way for our world to be a better place, is when we all stop discriminating others, and hating them for the color of their skin. But then again, there are many more things that can be done to help our world be even better. ( like no more plastic, since it affects our ocean and animals living in the water)
What is your number one study tip for all the students reading this?
Be patient. No matter what happens when studying, be patient at all times. The reason being is because when studying, many people tend to overthink, loose track, or even get anxious and annoyed to even start. So being patient can help us remain calm, and help us have a clear thinking of the situation.

Singing, playing, drawing, video games.

My biggest role model is Joe Biden because I can act the same way as him for my career.

I plan to make the world a better place by changing the environment and economics.

My number 1 study tip is to understand and focus.
How To Identify Safety Schools In College Admissions
Safety schools are often overlooked during the college search and application process. “A safety school is one that a student is almost certain to get into,” Mandee Heller Adler, founder and president of Florida-based International College Counselors, wrote in an email.
How to Find Safety Schools:
- Applicants should make a list of reach, target and safety schools. Reach schools are typically those where an applicant is a long shot while target schools are those where a prospective student may have a better chance of being admitted.
- “A student can judge whether a school is a safety school for them by comparing their grades and test scores to the school’s admissions statistics for the average first-year student. If a prospective student’s academic credentials are well above this range, then they can consider the school a safety school,” Adler says.
Why Students Should Consider Safety Schools:
- “Students should consider safety/likely schools on their lists because by definition, a reach school is not easy to get into for that student,” Dimock says.
- “So having likely schools and target schools (some people call them possible or 50/50 schools) on their list is a good idea so that a student has a few solid choices at the end of their application process, especially should those reach schools not come through,” she says.
When to Apply to Safety Schools:
- “I typically like to have students begin forming their college lists with the reach/dream schools during Junior year and as it becomes clearer what type of school a student likes we start to expand that list to include similar schools that are in their target and likely range,” Katie Burns, a master college admissions counselor at IvyWise, wrote in an email.

Khan’s Tutorial Policy Update
Starting this week, Khan’s Tutorial will be requiring all students to keep their CAMERAS ON during instruction.
Why Is This Important?
This will help instructors make sure all students are attentive during lesson/classwork
How Does This Benefit Both Instructors/Students?
Students will be forced to minimize distractions while in class
Instructors don’t have to guess if a student is paying attention or not
What Do You Have To Do?
Ensure your student has their cameras on and are paying attention to what their instructor requires
Khan’s Tutorial Recorded Sessions Available
Khan’s Tutorial will also be providing recorded session as a way to make up a missed class. We will now be allowing our students access to Zoom recordings of missed classes. These recordings will ONLY be available 10 days after the initial class date. Parents and students can access the missed classes by logging into their accounts on KTlearning.com and clicking “Access Content” for the class that they missed. It will provide the student with the recording and any other class materials. We recommend LIVE classes as they are the best resource and provide real time instruction, but these recorded sessions are a great way to make up a missed lesson.

Khan’s Tutorial has released their college research and planning workshop video. This video is a great free resource to parents and college bound students, as it answers a lot of questions students may have about where they want to go in the future. CEO Ivan Khan leads the workshop and tells us about his journey through the college process to becoming an MD. Dr. Khan answers many questions and offers different pathways to achieving one’s dreams. Dr. Khan discusses the top schools for arts and humanities, business, finance, and law. He goes over the academic requirements as well as the SAT and ACT ranges that top schools look for. This workshop is a wonderful resource to watch with your family!
