Jackson Heights, NY – April 2, 2019 – This past Saturday, KT Chairperson Mrs. Nayeema Khan held a Mother’s Empowerment Workshop for mothers of middle school and high school students at KT’s SAT & Regents Center in Jackson Heights. As United Nations Goodwill Ambassador for education, Mrs. Khan’s goal has been to provide educational programs for both students and parents in the community. The workshop included a panel of mothers as well as several special guests.

Panelists discussed cross cultural parenting approaches, NYC school system tips, and strategies for middle school students transitioning to high school in an open forum with parents. Furthermore, Stuyvesant Principal Eric Contreras, a father of a Stuyvesant student and Stuyvesant graduate shared parenting tips for families with students headed to the Specialized High Schools this fall.
“One of the things that worries me the most is how well our community does once they get into a top NYC High School. Right now, hundreds of KT students are attending high school in New York City and we never want to see any student struggle. I remember the various challenges that I faced during my 4 years at Bronx Science. In addition to keeping up with the rigorous schoolwork, homework & exams, the quarterly report cards and parent teacher conferences were the most important items. I still remember my late father attending every single Parent Conference at Bronx Science so that he could develop a better relationship with my school teachers and learn how to better support me on my way to college and medical school. We really look forward to having a greater number of Khan’s Tutorial workshops for both mothers & fathers in our community moving forward,” said Dr. Ivan Khan, CEO & President of Khan’s Tutorial.
In 2019, Khan’s Tutorial’s High School Achievement Program helped 22 students score a 1300+ on their SATs, with five students scoring above a 1500. Additionally, this year Khan’s program helped students gain acceptance to several competitive schools including Harvard University & Columbia University.
With 11 locations in the outer boroughs of New York City, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and in the Jackson Heights, Jamaica, Astoria, Sunnyside, Ozone Park, and Floral Park neighborhoods of Queens, Khan’s Tutorial primarily serves in assisting families in low-income, new immigrant neighborhoods. Over 3,357 students have gained admission to New York City’s Specialized High Schools through Khan’s Tutorial since its inception in 1994.
